Opening Doors for Everyone

If you’re a regular visitor, you may have noticed some changes taking place at The Point recently.

Over the past couple of years, we’ve been working behind-the-scenes to make our much-loved home more sustainable, comfortable and fit for the future. As The Point gets older, it’s becoming more important to adapt the building so it can meet the challenges of a changing climate and continue serving our communities for years to come.

As part of our ambition to be Net Zero by 2030, we’ve worked with sustainable buildings experts and local suppliers to combine innovative technologies with traditional materials and craftsmanship. We’ve installed solar panels, replaced old gas boilers with air source heat pumps, added underfloor heating, improved insulation and draft-proofing and restored or upgraded single-glazed windows.

Throughout this work, we’ve taken great care to protect the character and historic features of the 18th century part of our building.

While these changes have brought about lots of benefits, they also created an unavoidable challenge. During the project, step-free access to two of our ground-floor spaces was lost. This made it more difficult for some people to take part in activities and events at The Point.

That’s why we were delighted to receive a Common Ground Award from the UK Government in March 2026. Thanks to this funding, we’ve been able to create a new doorway from reception and install ramp access to both spaces, restoring step-free access throughout the building.

This means more people can take part in activities, attend events and use our spaces without barriers. It also gives us greater flexibility to deliver our programmes and welcome even more people through our doors.

We’re very grateful for the support of the Common Ground Award. Thanks to this investment, The Point is once again fully accessible and ready to serve our communities for generations to come.

As a participatory arts charity we rely solely on fundraising to continue our much-needed work across communities in Doncaster, and our programmes can only run due to generous donations from trusts, foundations and community champions.
