Blog: Louise’s Creative Directions story

Louise is a regular attender of Creative Directions, our weekly art workshops for people experiencing mental health difficulties. She chatted to us about how Creative Directions has helped her.

I began to attend Creative Directions about 15 months ago. I experience PTSD with depression and anxiety and before coming here I was really socially isolated – I hadn’t left my house in 6 months.

I’ve studied art and music, so I was interested in the creative nature of the sessions to begin with. When I first attended Creative Directions, I came with a carer, but the support in the sessions is fantastic and I soon settled in and felt comfortable. I’m dyslexic, and I find it difficult to go to new places for fear that people will consider me ‘stupid’. I’ve never had to worry about that here – I felt welcome and supported from the very start.

For me, that welcoming environment is the best thing about coming to Creative Directions – there’s no judgement, and it’s a wonderful opportunity to meet other people in a safe space.

I’ve gone from being socially isolated to making lots of new friends here, many of whom I feel will be lifelong friends. Now I attend every week, and sometimes I bring my daughter to family workshops here at The Point on weekends too.

I think the quality of the arts workshops is really amazing and so varied – I’ve tried new things that I never would have had the opportunity to try otherwise. I’ve had the opportunity to explore and test my comfort zone in a place where I feel accepted and at home.

Attending Creative Directions has put me on the track to recovering the confidence I used to have. It’s been an invaluable stepping stone to rebuilding my life.

To anyone thinking of attending, I would say – try it! Coming to Creative Directions was the best decision I ever made.
