Charlie is a Community Dance Artist working inclusively to deliver dance that is fun and accessible for everyone – whether seated or standing, younger or older. She has been working with darts since September 2018 and says “We always have such fun in all our sessions and we all love just dancing with one another, but I particularly love those sessions where everyone feels relaxed enough to really have some creative fun together and give me some ideas and inspiration!”
We asked Charlie what has been helping her during lockdown and she told us:
My family have been paramount in helping me to get through lockdown. I am a social person and love to spend time with friends, family and people in my sessions. We usually hug a lot and I miss that contact.
Thankfully I am locked down with my husband and 2 children (aged 19 & 17) and they have been wonderful. We have used this time for us to spend some quality together.
Charlie has also created the Dancing In Driveways initiative from her home. This is for her family and neighbours on her road, where everyone dances together at a social distance from their driveways, gardens and windows. She says: “It has been such a joy and a tonic to see each other every day and have some time to just dance, particularly for those who live alone or are isolating.”
For darts at Home, Charlie has been adapting her face to face Dance On activity by recording dance videos for online use, leading live Zoom dance sessions and creating new ways of reaching people who are more isolated or who don’t have access to the internet. She says:
Although it is so hard when you are an artist for whom the face to face contact, touch and being together in one space is what you are all about, it has become rewarding as we have learnt to find a creative way through this difficult time and to keep in touch.
