Hayley Graham delivers dance sessions for participants aged 50+ in settings across Doncaster as part of our Dance On project. We interviewed Hayley to find out more about where her passion for dance came from and what it is about dance that she loves so much.

How long have you been dancing for and what inspired you to become a dancer?

I have been dancing since I was a young child and always loved it as a hobby. I was very inspired by my dance teachers and also the dancers I was lucky enough to see perform on stage. I thought it would be great to have a job where you can be creative and get to do so many amazing things so decided to go for it!

What do you love most about dancing with people?

The sense of community! It is a privilege to be able to meet so many lovely people and get to know each other through a shared love of dancing. Many of my classes now feel like little families!

How has the pandemic impacted your work? What have the challenges been and how have you adapted your practice?

With the pandemic a lot of the work in community settings and the dance studio has stopped. It has been challenging but I am grateful for being able to run and take part in online classes instead so we can still dance together! I have also adapted by doing online videos, sending out prop boxes and dance resources so that as many people as possible are still able to enjoy dancing at home.

What’s your favourite kind of music to dance to?

Anything cheerful and upbeat! I love music that makes you want to move and puts a smile on your face.

Where do you get your ideas and inspiration from?

All over! Often, I will start with a theme or mood I want to create and take it from there. I find music very inspiring and regularly want to do something with a piece of music because it evokes a certain feeling, or I just love it! The dance community is so friendly, and it is really refreshing to bounce ideas off other dance artists and talk and share together. I also love sharing things with participants too and find their creativity really inspiring.
