We spoke to Dave, our Creative Health Facilitator, who completed the Great North Run to raise funds for darts. Find out more about Dave’s run below!
Hi Dave! Have you done any big races like the Great North Run before?
No, prior to training, I think the furthest I’d run was maybe 8km, so the prospect of 21km was quite daunting – especially on these old knees.
Why did you want to take part in the race?
I am from Newcastle and have always heard that the Great North Run has an incredible atmosphere. That coupled with the personal, physical challenge and the ability to run it with my two brothers for amazing charities, convinced me to give it a go.
Thank you for choosing darts as your charity to fundraise for! Why did you choose us?
For me, it was a no brainer! darts genuinely changes people’s lives. Every penny of investment goes into transforming the way in which people move through the world, making each step a little brighter. I’ve seen this first hand, from a toddler learning to speak and move to an older person living with dementia and their carer, the interactions people have with this charity are worth all the blisters, achy joints and rainy training runs a million times over. I couldn’t think of a more worthy place to fundraise for.
Congratulations on completing the run! How did you feel after crossing the finish line?
I crossed the finish line with my brothers. We did it together, as a family and that was the most special thing about it! That being said, I was ready for a glass of wine and a takeaway!
Your fundraising will support darts to deliver creative activities for people across Doncaster, to support life, learning and health. How important do you think creative activities are to people’s health and wellbeing?
Although I am biased to this cause, I think the world is coming round to the fact that people want and need creativity in their lives, especially as part of their health and personal growth. I see the work that darts undertakes on a daily basis as vital in providing the residents of Doncaster with the space to see their lives through a different lens, one filled with colour and movement, imagination, reflection and story. If that is not important, then I don’t know what is…
