Introducing: Active Fusion
The Point is not only home to darts! We have a handful of neighbours who are also based within our building, working in different areas from music to sports. We think it’s nice to know all the different parts that make The Point what it is, so we’ll be introducing each of them on the website over the next few weeks.
One of our neighbours is Active Fusion. Below, Jonny, their Head of Operations, discusses what Active Fusion is and the type of work they do.
Active Fusion was originally established in 2002 as an initiative called the Flying High School Sport Partnership. It was dependent on government funding, but it transformed into a sustainable charitable organisation in 2018, and was called Active Fusion. It aims to inspire and implement solutions for young people to be the best they can be through physical and personal development opportunities.
Our main services include:
- Providing bespoke PE, Sport, Physical Health and wellbeing programmes for schools.
- Providing the most comprehensive professional development programmes for school staff in Doncaster.
- Creating a leadership development pathway from KS1 into employment.
- Deliver apprenticeship programmes and other accredited qualifications.
- Co-ordinate and deliver over 80 competitive sporting opportunities.
- Development of new innovative educational resources and programmes.
- Deliver a range of holiday and community physical activity camps.
I am Head of Operations so a typical day involves making sure I know what everyone else is doing and ensuring Active Fusion is delivering the highest quality to all our partners. I keep an eye on things like marketing and finance and sort out general enquiries as well as maintaining and developing customer/client relationships. I attend meetings with partner organisations or sit on steering groups such as Get Doncaster Moving or Doncaster Children & Young People’s Group. I manage a few members of the team and it’s my job to guide and help them develop their projects and skills to grow as individuals. I’d say that no two days are ever the same!
I got into this area of work by initially working in a primary school as a sports specialist, but I had become very active in community sport at my cricket club and got into a more developmental role. I started leading on projects, bidding for funding, working in partnership with other organisations and managing volunteer coaches and I really enjoyed it. Active Fusion came along at the right time for me in my career and since January 2015 I haven’t looked back!
I think Active Fusion is important because we recognise that every person is different and tailor our programmes and initiatives to ensure that everyone has a chance to be the best they can be in whatever physical activity they choose. We have such a passion team who are so motivated to help people of all ages better themselves. Our leadership pathways are designed to enable social mobility and develop local people – they in turn have the opportunity to develop and enhance their communities.
Being based at The Point is great. It’s a lovely central location for us, close to all our partners. There’s lots of space in the building and all the other organisations here have been friendly and welcoming to us. darts have been very accommodating with everything we’ve needed in order to settle in. We’ve just got our office kitted out with new furniture and once everyone’s back from summer holidays we’ll be raring to go again!
