Me, Myself & I

On show in the gallery at The Point 7 March - 1 April

Me Myself & I is the latest exhibition from Artistic Spectrum which explores the personal experiences of people with autism at three key stages of life: as children, as young adults and as older adults. The exhibition features a series of large scale pictures created from mixed media including found objects, embroidery, ceramics and paint. When displayed together these create a wonderfully detailed, tactile and varied exhibition.

Me Myself & I is a project funded by The Lottery through their People’s Projects scheme. Artistic Spectrum, a not for profit organization based in Thorne, South Yorkshire, won a public vote for the funding to work with adults and children with Autism. The sessions have been run at their ArtSpace in Thorne, and at outreach sessions across the Borough of Doncaster.

The idea was to encourage participants to put their daily experiences into creating artworks using a variety of media. These have ranged from drawing, painting, collage, photography, textiles and ceramics. The range of work reflects the diversity to be found in people with autism. In the exhibition you will see abstract photography, clay hotdogs and pizza slices, faces and drawings filled with imagination, humour and longing.

The Me Myself & I project has run for a year and in that time over 90 students have enjoyed exploring their creativity, meeting others and feeling a proud sense of achievement at seeing their work framed and exhibited. The Artspace has become a haven of peaceful, joyful inventiveness, a place where enjoyment and creativity is encouraged and celebrated.
