darts' home, The Point, has a large contemporary Gallery space showing a wide range of contemporary exhibitions each year
We use each exhibition to inspire family workshops, local schools and groups that meet in the building. The gallery space is incredibly flexible and we have transformed the walls into a giant comic book, created a double height enormous sand elephant and filled the space with inflatable microbes, amongst many other things!
The Gallery at The Point shows between four and six exhibitions per year, attracting nationally significant exhibitions such as ‘Matisse: Drawing with Scissors’ a Hayward touring exhibition from Southbank Centre and the Tate/Royal Galleries of Scotland/Artist Rooms’ Bill Viola exhibition.
As well as hosting touring exhibitions, we curate our own highly successful shows such Rebel Daughters with 60+ local, national and international women artists showing work to commemorate 100 years of votes for women and Imagination Point, transforming the space into a children’s playground full of weird and wonderful landscapes for families to explore.
We also collaborate with partners to create new world-class touring exhibitions. We worked with 2021 in Scunthorpe and Gallery@ The Civic in Barnsley to commission Pirates, Pants and Wellyphants – an interactive exhibition created with children’s illustrator Nick Sharratt (still touring nationally with over 150,000 visitors to date) and Animotion, using the latest technology and animation to engage and immerse audiences in virtual worlds.
These exhibitions have enabled us to explore how we can connect our gallery to our participatory programme – experienced artist facilitators find ways of immersing participants in the work so that it is both accessible and inspiring. In this way, we can build new audiences for visual arts that are not traditional gallery visitors.
